Job Description:

The Analytics & Insights team is responsible for providing analysis of Oil, Gas, Power and Emissions markets to the trading and origination teams within Supply, Trading & Shipping. Analysis performed by the team provides commercial value by keeping traders, originators, and management informed of underlying views that affect the markets as well as a toolkit to quantify these views and their price discovery.

The Market Strategist role resides in the Gas and Power Strategist team. One of the core elements of this field is to identify changes in supply and demand fundamentals within different regions of the market and communicate the likely impact on price action to the trading and origination teams. This key role will work alongside the bench to provide such analysis in service of crafting models, foundational views and trading strategies in line with changing market dynamics. Analysis performed by the individual and team will have a direct linkage to commercial value creation and assist in keeping traders, originators, and management informed of underlying fundamental views that affect the markets.

This role supports our Brazil Power team based in Sao Paulo. The Brazil Power business is part of BP Supply Trading and Shipping, an industry leader in Energy Trading. This will include learning, creating and maintaining models, assumptions and data to provide a quantitative and fundamental framework for pricing and risk analysis in both the short term and long term space while engaging with the interested parties in the trading and origination teams to take and manage risk. The role will also involve working with other strategists to refine, communicate and constantly improve the toolkit.

Applicants must have significant experience with Brazil power markets and their analysis with a track record of delivering analysis and statistical models in a commercial environment.

Key Accountabilities

  • Be the primary contact for Brazil Power analytics to all partners.
  • Constantly supervise market news and regulatory developments in Brazil and alert collaborators in real time where appropriate.
  • Providing clear market analysis and trading strategies to the Power desk.
  • Run price forecasts (NEWAVE, DECOMP, DESSEM) and sensitivities autonomously.
  • Continuously improve and expand analytics toolkit (models, dashboards and reports).
  • Work alongside other strategists, meteorologists and vendors to capture tradeable insights.
  • Evolve and develop proprietary models for forecasts (demand, distributed generation, wind, hydro).
  • Run innovative analysis to propose and support trading and origination opportunities (time and region spreads, modulation, i5).

Essential Education

Hold a degree in a quantitative, economics, statistical, mathematical, engineering or similar field

Job Requirements

  • Spoken and written fluency in Portuguese and English.
  • Extensive experience with Brazil power markets as either a trader or an analyst on a trading/origination team.
  • Extensive experience with the fundamentals that drive Brazil Power and related markets. This includes familiarity with Brazil hydro and other fundamental drivers of market risk.
  • Extensive experience with regulatory frameworks governing energy markets in Brazil.
  • Experience working with Python, SQL and Excel in a professional setting.
  • Experience with building models in NEWAVE, DECOMP and DESSEM, running them and interpreting the results.
  • Ability to interpret data and information to conclude and communicate views both formally and informally.
  • Independent thinker; creative in finding alternative solutions
  • Proactive approach to delivering results; able to deal with conflict and field critical questioning
  • Experience in quantitative modelling skills including working with large and incomplete datasets.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience with NORUS cloud services to run BR power models.
  • Experience with using Hydro outlooks from Reuters and TempoOk
  • Experience with applying cutting edge quantitative modeling approaches like machine learning to professional models.
