Job Description Summary

As a Advanced Lead Engineer-Process Modeling, you will collaborate with engineers and scientists across the enterprise to advance cutting-edge manufacturing processes, including Additive Manufacturing, Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs), Polymer Matrix Composites (PMCs), and Advanced Coatings. You'll apply numerical methods and physics-based modeling to solve complex manufacturing challenges and translate models into scalable, real-world solutions in aerospace. Success in this role includes accelerating process development, optimization and qualification, improving yield and quality, and enabling new product introductions.

Job Description

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

You will:
  • Conduct research in an interdisciplinary team environment focused on the design and optimization of advanced manufacturing processes, including metal and ceramic additive manufacturing, composites, coatings, and related areas.
  • Partner with business stakeholders and customers to define clear problem statements and measurable success criteria.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (design, materials, manufacturing) to establish scope, technical approach, and action plans; engage directly with stakeholders to track progress against deliverables, schedules, and budgets.
  • Lead the development of physics-based models for new manufacturing technologies and translate model outputs into process parameters, controls, and monitoring strategies.
  • Maintain model libraries, calibration datasets, and verification/validation plans to ensure accuracy and currency.
  • Work both independently and as part of a team to execute technical plans; design experiments to validate models and expand material and process capabilities; document results to enable knowledge sharing in applicable systems.
  • Build alignment and consensus with project stakeholders on multi-phase deliverables, milestones, and goals.
  • Produce decision-ready analyses that support readiness, qualification, and continuous improvement.
  • Communicate results and recommendations effectively through written reports and oral presentations to broader teams, including leadership, highlighting significant developments and implications.
  • Foster a strong customer focus by prioritizing Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost in all activities.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Material Science & Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline with at least 2 years of relevant experience; or a Master's degree in one of these disciplines with at least 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Expertise in numerical methods (e.g., Finite Element Method, FEM) applied to chemical and/or mechanical engineering problems.
  • Proficiency in scientific software development using languages such as C, C++, Python, and Fortran.
  • Strong foundation in simulation and modeling of Multiphysics and Multiscale manufacturing processes (e.g., additive manufacturing, CMCs, PMCs, coatings, casting, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to independently translate complex industrial manufacturing processes into physics-based analytical models to predict performance, optimize processes, and drive improvements.
  • Ability to synthesize analysis into actionable recommendations and measurable results.
  • Proven cross-functional communication skills and stakeholder alignment across teams.
  • US Citizenship is required.
  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.

DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS :
  • Knowledge of, and familiarity with, one or more established commercial software platforms such as Ansys Mechanical, Fluent / CFX, LS-DYNA, COMSOL Multiphysics, Abaqus, ProCast, FLOW-3D CAST, DEFORM, Simufact or others.
  • Experience with manufacturing process development in areas such as additive, composites, coatings, casting, forging, and welding.
  • Experience in material & process modeling for metallic and ceramic materials and process-microstructure-property understanding.
  • Experience with modeling transport phenomena with chemical reactions
  • Experienced in applying machine learning and AI tools to enhance materials and process physics-based modeling for industrial use cases.
  • Proven track record of publications in peer‑reviewed journals and conference proceedings in process modeling.
  • Highly innovative, self-motivated, and able to conduct research independently.
  • Strong influencing skills with customers, management, and project teams.
  • Excellent teamwork, communication, and flexibility.
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment and partner with other organizations to execute research projects.

The base pay range for this position is 90,000 - 175,000 USD annually . The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, education, and skill set.
