Job Description Summary

The Inspection Signal Analytics Research Engineer / Scientist is responsible for developing, implementing, and applying data-processing and analytics methods to nondestructive inspection signals, with a focus on ultrasound and eddy current inspection data. This role supports the detection, characterization, and evaluation of indications in materials and components, enabling improved inspection performance, quality assurance, and reliability.

Job Description

Site Overview

Established in 2000, the John F. Welch Technology Center (JFWTC) in Bengaluru is our multidisciplinary research and engineering center. Engineers and scientists at JFWTC have contributed to hundreds of aviation patents, pioneering breakthroughs in engine technologies, advanced materials, and additive manufacturing.

Key Responsibilities
Signal Processing and Analytics
  • Develop and apply signal processing algorithms for ultrasound and eddy current inspection data, including filtering, feature extraction, and noise reduction.
  • Analyze inspection signals to detect, classify, and characterize indications, defects, or anomalies.
  • Implement and refine inspection data-processing workflows to improve sensitivity, robustness, and efficiency.
Data Analysis and Interpretation
  • Interpret inspection results in the context of material properties, component geometry, and inspection procedures.
  • Perform statistical analysis and data analytics to assess inspection performance and reliability (e.g., POD, false call rates).
  • Document assumptions, methods, and limitations associated with signal analytics approaches.
Tool and Algorithm Development
  • Develop, validate, and maintain analysis tools and scripts for processing ultrasound and eddy current data.
  • Evaluate and integrate new signal analytics techniques, including advanced filtering, pattern recognition, and machine learning where appropriate.
  • Support automation of inspection data workflows to streamline data handling and reporting.
Collaboration and Technical Support
  • Collaborate with NDE/NDT engineers, materials engineers, design teams, and quality organizations to define inspection requirements and interpret results.
  • Provide technical guidance on inspection data quality, signal interpretation, and limitations of inspection methods.
  • Contribute to procedure development, qualification activities, and documentation for inspection methods.
Research, Innovation, and Continuous Improvement
  • Stay current with advances in inspection signal analytics, ultrasound and eddy current technologies, and data science methods.
  • Identify opportunities to improve detection capability, reduce inspection time, and enhance data reliability.
  • Contribute to research projects, publications, and intellectual property as applicable.

Required Qualifications
  • Education
    • Master's degree (MS) in Electronics and communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Data Science, or a related field, or
    • PhD in a related discipline with relevant research or industrial experience.

Required Skills and Competencies
  • Technical Skills
    • Strong background in signal processing (time- and frequency-domain methods, filtering, feature extraction).
    • Hands-on experience processing ultrasound inspection data (e.g., A-scan, B-scan, C-scan) and/or eddy current signals.
    • Familiarity with NDE/NDT concepts, inspection configurations, and typical sources of signal variation and noise.
    • Proficiency with programming or analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python, or similar) for data processing and visualization.
  • Analytical and Problem-Solving
    • Ability to analyze complex datasets, identify patterns, and draw clear, evidence-based conclusions.
    • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data integrity, accuracy, and quality.
    • Ability to troubleshoot signal anomalies, data artifacts, and processing issues.
  • Collaboration and Communication
    • Effective written and verbal communication skills for documenting methods, presenting results, and explaining complex concepts.
    • Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams with colleagues from diverse technical backgrounds.
    • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.

Work Environment
  • Role may involve collaboration with laboratory, field inspection, and engineering teams.
  • Some travel may be required to support onsite inspections, trials, or collaboration with partners and suppliers.
