Biological Safety Officer and Deputy Departmental Safety Officer

About the role
This is a 12-month maternity cover contract and will provide essential scientific and biological safety support within a research-intensive academic environment. As the interim Departmental Biological Safety Officer (BSO), and with other members of the safety team, you will help mitigate the significant range of hazards inherent to our subject, promoting safe practices and providing expert advice. This includes animals, plants, fungi, microbes, and occasionally soils, and spans ecology, conservation, molecular studies, disease biology, and evolution. The role will also be directly supported by the Divisional Safety Officer for Biology.
About you
A postgraduate degree OR equivalent experience in a lab-based biological science related field: this must include experience of health and safety in a lab environment. Including knowledge of relevant biological health and safety legislation and regulations.
Experience working at containment level 2 (CL2) or above within one or more specific areas of: microorganisms, insects, animals, plants, soils, or a combination thereof.
Excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to work effectively in a team and to handle sensitive information appropriately; and maintain a strong, long-lasting safety culture, promoting safety awareness, and facilitating innovative, safe teaching and research.
