This Position reports to:
R&D Team Lead

The Mechanical Design Draftsman - Product Development, support product engineers in the design, development, and optimization of mechanical components and assemblies. The role focuses on preparing, modifying, and reviewing 2D and 3D CAD models, determining tolerances according to manufacturing processes, performing tolerance stack-up calculations, and contributing technical insights to improve product manufacturability, quality, and functionality.

The position requires attention to details, solid understanding of mechanical drafting principles, and the ability to proactively identify issues and propose design improvements.

This role is contributing to the Electrication, Installation Products of ABB Canada and is located in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.

The work model is hybrid, with 2 days per week at the office (4 days per week during the first weeks).

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Create, update, and maintain 2D/ 3D CAD drawings, and technical documentation to support engineering activities.
  • Determine manufacturing tolerances and apply GD&T according to applicable standards and processes.
  • Perform tolerance stack-up analysis to ensure proper fit, function, and assembly robustness.
  • Update Bills of Materials (BOM) within the PLM system and ensure alignment with established standards.
  • Support continuous improvement, quality, and cost-reduction initiatives by producing or reviewing drawings and technical specifications to ensure safety, conformity, and manufacturability.
  • Create and support improvements to standard documentation, templates, and design processes to enhance reusability, productivity, and innovation.
  • Assist in optimizing new or existing designs to meet standards, incorporate new or alternative components to improve overall performance.
  • Participate in design reviews and projects meetings to support technical aspects when required.
  • Work collaboratively with product engineers to establish work plans, prioritize tasks, and ensure deliverables are completed on time.
  • Communicate progress, challenges, and risks to ensure proper visibility and alignment with project priorities.


TECHNICAL, SKILLS AND ABILITY REQUIRED
  • DEC or professional certificate or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in manufacturing industries.
  • Experience in 2D/3D modeling and PLM systems (knowledge of Creo is an asset).
  • Knowledge of Design-for-manufacturing principles and basic design thinking methodologies (knowledge of DFMEA/PFMEA is an asset).
  • Attention to details and sense of rigor.
  • Ability to communicate and work in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Bilingual French and English (spoken and written). English is necessary to communicate with clients outside of Quebec.
