LOCATION: MediaCity UK, Salford. Hybrid
PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £70,000 - £80,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
Purpose of The Role
The BBC Children's and Education use YouTube to reach audiences where they are to ensure all audiences gain value from the BBC. This year we will be significantly increasing our YouTube output with a new portfolio of channels and bespoke YouTube-first commissioned content that's innovative and platform-authentic to reach the largest audiences in the UK. Our ambition is to deliver high-quality, YouTube native content that upholds the BBC standards for world-class content children love and families trust.
The role of Commissioning Executive - You Tube has been created to meet the needs of our sophisticated contemporary young audience and the successful candidate will be confident and experienced in meeting those needs in the modern media landscape.

The Commissioning & Acquisitions Team at BBC Children's identifies and secures the widest range of top quality content from both the UK and internationally to satisfy the needs of our modern, sophisticated young audience. We reach our audience via a wide range of platforms including the CBeebies and CBBC channels, iPlayer, YouTube, mobile and on-line including CBeebies Parenting. We offer an enormous choice of programming from animations like Hey Duggee and Super Happy Magic Forest to dramas like Football Fantastics, Balamory and Crookhaven. Uniquely, we also feature a world-class portfolio of children's Factual like Horrible Histories, Operation Ouch, Numberblocks, Something Special and Andy's Adventures and comedies like Waffle The Wonder Dog and High Hoops, and entertainment shows like Bros in Control and Saturday Mash Up and YouTube first content like CBeebies House Time to Play and stand-out family event programming such as the CBeebies Specials, CBeebies Prom, Panto and Shakespeare. For CBeebies Parenting we offer informative, expert led content to support Parents in their parenting journey eg. CBeebies Parenting Podcasts.

Your responsibilities and impact
- To work closely with the two Senior Heads of Commissioning (0-6 and 7+) and the Children and Education Head of YouTube to identify, develop, commission and deliver top quality, original YouTube first content from suppliers both in the UK and around the world for a portfolio of YouTube channels for children and families, including CBeebies, CBBC, Blue Peter, Newsround and CBeebies Parenting.
- Ensure that the development of ideas meets the needs of our modern audience and that content is appropriate to its target age group and reflects the diverse nature and needs of our audiences
- To be an ambassador for BBC Children's and a touch point for the YouTube and Digital first community within rest of UK and globally.
- Being responsible for giving feedback on designated current series in a timely manner whilst maintaining a respectful relationship with indies and creators
- Strong decision maker with the ability to articulate reasoning behind editorial choices.
- Good sense of the modern commercial, business and co-production environment.
Your Skills and Experience
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
- In-depth understanding of YouTube platform, including discoverability, content, formats, episodic structures and trends
- Experienced researching audience niches, channel outliers and using performance data and insight to guide development and iteration
- Good understanding of children's audiences behaviours and trends
- Excellent editorial and creative judgement with an established track record in YouTube commissioning or production for young audiences working across multiple genres
- Thorough understanding of the audience and wider competitive kids' landscape and current trends.
- Good production knowledge with a proven record of successful programme making across a variety of styles and genres.
- Experience of a production pipeline from development through to delivery.
- Sound editorial judgment and knowledge of editorial policy and fair trading issues.
- Confidence and experience to give meaningful and robust feedback on editorial and production components of process
- Managing relationships internally and externally
- Self-starter who is adaptable to change as needs evolve, and strong creative problem-solving skills.
- Strong understanding of safeguarding, editorial policy, IP and consent, working in conjunction with BBC Children's and Education Compliance teams.
- Ability to identify and develop new talent, and a good understanding of the creator landscape
