Wood (trading locally as WOOD KSS LLP) is currently recruiting for an Opportunity Shaping Engineer (KZ passport holders) with extensive experience in the oil and gas petrochemical industry to join our team in Atyrau, Kazakhstan.
The Opportunity Shaping Engineer is tasked with laying the groundwork for successful capital project development by guiding projects through the critical early phases—specifically CPMS Phase 1 (Identify) and Phase 2 (Select). This role employs a structured, multidisciplinary approach to define project concepts, evaluate alternatives, and ensure robust decision-making, all aimed at setting projects up for effective investment and execution.

The Opportunity Shaping Engineer is tasked with laying the groundwork for successful capital project development by guiding projects through the critical early phases—specifically CPMS Phase 1 (Identify) and Phase 2 (Select). This role employs a structured, multidisciplinary approach to define project concepts, evaluate alternatives, and ensure robust decision-making, all aimed at setting projects up for effective investment and execution.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Project Opportunity Definition and Problem Framing
- Lead and facilitate targeted workshops and collaborative sessions to identify project opportunities and clearly articulate business or technical challenges.
- Document workshop outcomes, including opportunity statements, problem definitions, and agreed-upon objectives.
Development and Evaluation of Alternatives
- Generate a range of potential solutions for each project, leveraging technical studies, engineering analysis, and feasibility assessments.
- Compare alternatives based on technical, operational, financial, safety, and environmental criteria.
- Present a rationale for selected alternatives, including analysis summaries and supporting documentation.
Risk Management and Safeguarding
- Conduct early-phase risk assessments in alignment with CPMS requirements, identifying key risks and mitigation strategies.
- Develop and maintain risk registers, including risk ratings, descriptions, and recommended safeguards.
- Integrate risk management findings into project decision packages and review processes.
Decision Support Package Preparation
- Compile comprehensive decision support packages for management review, including:
- Recommended project concepts and alternatives
- Detailed cost and schedule estimates
- Risk registers and mitigation plans
- Business case justifications and alignment with strategic objectives
- Ensure all deliverables are clear, data-driven, and tailored to support informed investment decisions.
Portfolio Alignment and Prioritization
- Prepare deliverables to support portfolio management, including prioritization lists, forecasting reports, and alignment matrices.
- Regularly review project portfolio to ensure alignment with organizational strategy, resource availability, and business goals.
Cross-Functional Coordination
- Coordinate input and feedback from engineering, operations, finance, Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE), and other relevant disciplines.
- Facilitate multidisciplinary team meetings to validate project concepts and ensure comprehensive coverage of all critical aspects.
- Document stakeholder contributions and integrate feedback into project deliverables.
Agile Project Management Integration
- Apply Agile project management methodologies to capital project development, enhancing flexibility, transparency, and stakeholder engagement.
- Organize and manage up to three Scrum teams in parallel, depending on project complexity.
- Facilitate regular Scrum ceremonies (e.g., sprint planning, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews) and ensure deliverables are tracked and reported.
- All project showcases and milestone reviews will be conducted physically in Atyrau to foster collaboration and transparency.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Higher (technical) education
- Work experience in the respective position no less than 5 years
- Proficient user of relevant software and calculation templates
- Professional level of ability in the application of standards, processes, and procedures and how they are used in work execution
- Professional level of knowledge of applicable codes and standards
- Technically competent in own discipline, pursues continuous professional development of skills and knowledge according to standards
- Maintains own knowledge of relevant regulatory framework, legislation changes, initiatives and industry technology developments and promotes to direct reports
