JOB DESCRIPTION

NOV is seeking an experienced HSE Specialist to support HydraRig manufacturing facility in Calgary temporarily.

This role requires field presence and the ability to work independently in a dynamic environment. The HSE Specialist will support safe execution of non-routine work and regular activities, ensuring compliance with Alberta OHS legislation and NOV standards.

This is a 6-months, project-based temporary role requiring a consistent onsite presence. The HSE Specialist will play a key role in ensuring safe execution of all activities performed by both NOV employees and contractors, with a strong emphasis on non-routine work planning, hazard control, and zero harm performance. Must be able to multitask and is self-motivated individual who requires minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities

Onsite HSE Oversight

  • Provide daily onsite HSE coverage throughout all onsite activities
  • Act as the primary HSE contact onsite, supporting supervisors, employees, and contractors
  • Monitor and enforce compliance with Alberta OHS Act, Regulation and Code, and NOV standards
  • Identify hazards, intervene in unsafe conditions, and exercise stop-work authority when required


Non-Routine Work & Risk Management

  • Support planning and execution of non-routine and regular activities
  • Ensure appropriate development and review of:
    • Job Hazard Assessments (JHAs)
    • Safe Work Procedures
    • Permits to Work
  • Work closely with supervisors to ensure hazards are identified, assessed, and controlled prior to work execution
  • Promote strong pre-job planning and hazard awareness across the workforce


High-Risk Work Oversight

  • Oversee safe execution of high-risk activities including:
    • Deconstruction or move
    • Energy isolation (LOTO)
    • Confined space entry
    • Working at heights
    • Rigging and lifting operations
    • Handling and disposal of hazardous materials


Inspections, Audits & Investigations

  • Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and safety observations
  • Lead incident and near-miss investigations, including root cause analysis
  • Track and ensure timely closure of corrective actions
  • Maintain accurate HSE records and documentation


Training & Communication

  • Lead toolbox talks, pre-job hazard assessments, and site safety meetings
  • Support delivery of task-specific and non-routine work safety guidance
  • Participate in or support the site Safety Committee
  • Maintain strong working relationships with site teams, supervisors, and corporate HSE


Health, Compliance & Environmental Support

  • Provide first aid support as required
  • Support WCB coordination and reporting requirements
  • Ensure compliance with:
    • Industrial hygiene requirements (noise, respiratory protection, etc.)
    • WHMIS and hazard communication
    • Waste management and environmental protection practices


Reporting & Continuous Improvement

  • Track and report HSE performance, observations, and trends
  • Provide regular updates to HSE and project management
  • Recommend improvements to procedures, controls, and site conditions


Qualifications & Experience

  • Post-secondary education or certification in Occupational Health & Safety or related field
  • Minimum 5+ years of HSE experience, preferably in:
    • Industrial or manufacturing environments
    • Deconstruction, demolition, or construction projects
  • Experience supporting non-routine work planning and execution
  • Strong knowledge of Alberta OHS legislation and code
  • Experience working with both internal workforces and contractors
  • Professional designation (CRSP, NCSO, or equivalent) is an asset


Skills & Competencies

  • Strong field leadership and visible safety presence
  • Ability to work independently and influence frontline workers and supervisors
  • Confident in enforcing compliance and addressing unsafe work
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational, reporting, and documentation abilities


Certifications

  • First Aid / CPR (required)
  • WHMIS (required)
  • Fall Protection, Confined Space, LOTO (preferred)


Working Conditions

  • Combination of office, shop, yard, including active demolition environment
  • Exposure to noise, dust, heavy equipment, and outdoor conditions
  • Physical activity required (walking, climbing, uneven surfaces)
  • PPE required at all times onsite
