Senior Engineer - Modeling & Economics Studies

Total Energies
Context & Environment
Port Arthur Platform is a sophisticated integrated platform with a merchant refinery with access to major crude/product pipelines and marine facilities, located on a very dynamic US Gulf Coast market with an extremely volatile economic environment and rapidly changing regulations. The Modeling and Economic Studies Engineer is to work with LP, AURA, PITAGOR, PI VIsion, Excel and other tools to help the Port Arthur Platform take the right economic decisions towards better profitability.
Activities
* LP Back-cast: Perform a back-cast every month benchmarking the overall mass balance of the refinery and the unit level mass balance for LP accuracy identifying gaps and action for alignment. Define and follow up metrics of LP accuracy.
* LP Retro-Optimization: Perform periodic retro optimization using the LP to help assess loss of opportunity impacts and economic what-if for continued refinery optimization, in particular around Distillate and Gasoline Blending: work with the respective Coordinator and Performance Control Engineer to optimize blending operations.
* New LP versions: Validate new LP versions using backcast methodology. Assist Supply and Sales team (RSTO) with the validation for crude purchase, monthly plan, LTP and Budget process.
* Model Committee: Coordinate the Model Committee Meetings working with the refinery Process Engineers and the Modeling team in France to update the various process models and LP model to be ready for model yearly cycle and Long-Term Plan process. Coordinate with the Process Engineers the need for test-runs to update the unit models.
* Economic Tools: Assist with the maintenance and improvement of economic tools for Performance Control and Business Analysis. Work with RSTO to validate their offline margin models.
* LP Economic Studies: Assist Projects, RSTO and Strategy with various economic studies or simulation of feeds and quality in the future (ex. Major Maintenance Outages).
* Refinery Modeling Databook: Support maintenance and update of a document with relevant information about the simulation models and the optimization of the refinery using LP.
* Perform back up duties for Performance Control when unavailable.
Port Arthur Refinery:
* Linear program (LP): owner of the Port Arthur Refinery LP model, key tool for decision making on economic optimization, crude purchasing (for $4+billion raw material feedstock processing), and definition of material balance (then gross margin) of Long-Term Plan, Budget and Monthly Plan commitments. Identifies improvements to be done and coordinates their implementation, through Model Committees with local and central services resources.
* Process Model: Assist with the maintenance and updating of various independent process models.
* Economic Tools: Assist with the maintenance and improvement of Performance Control, Refinery Databook, and Business Analysis Tools to improve the efficiency of Valorization group and the relevance of economic decisions based on Refinery model optimization forecast and back-cast analysis.
* Valorization: Communicate and create awareness of economic impacts and lost opportunities, make recommendations to optimize current refinery operations.
Candidate Profile
* Bachelor of Science, Chemical Engineering and 3-5 years experience preferably in refining and refinery optimization. Strong knowledge of engineering concepts including material balance, hydrocarbon fractionation, hydrotreatment and conversion principles.
* Intermediate to advanced Excel. Advanced simulation using Linear Programming, processes modeling, optimization, APC or other equivalent tools. Proficient in data analysis, Word, Power Point, Power BI.
* Ability to work and communicate effectively with multi-disciplinary teams. Good problem-solving skills. Demonstrate autonomy and self-driven. Good time management and coordination to plan, organize and prioritize list of tasks.
