Principal Designer

Principal Civil Designer

Under general supervision, performs all conventional aspects of the functional area subject matter. Devises new approaches to problems encountered. Plans, schedules, and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria. Performs work which involves conventional engineering practice but may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, and difficult coordination requirements. Provides technical guidance to designers and less experienced engineers. Job tasks, correctly performed, impact indirectly on cost containment, efficiency, profitability or operations. Skills are typically acquired through TAFE or other tertiary institutions with minimum Diploma level in Civil Engineering Design and Drafting or similar and a minimum of 10 years related experience.

Scope:
  • Works under the instruction of the Discipline Manager and/or Lead Civil to complete designs as required, contributing to civil infrastructure engineering projects.
  • Completes work within negotiated standards of time, cost and quality.
  • Works within Australian Standards, KBR drawing office procedures and established industry practices.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of internal and external client needs.
  • Routinely identifies and resolves problems relating to the services.
  • Achieves a good level of client satisfaction.
  • Works with other staff in the team to co-ordinate related activities.
  • Contributes innovative ideas to the benefit of the drafting team.
  • Demonstrates a desire to improve quality and efficiency of the services.
  • Provide leadership to junior drafter/designer
  • Routinely seeks advice on matters outside of your experience or judgement.
  • Displays an appropriate balance of practicality and innovation in your work.

Qualifications and Experience
  • Civil Engineering Diploma or Associate Diploma in Civil Engineering
  • Minimum 10 years' experience in using 12D or Open Roads for civil infrastructure projects.
  • AutoCAD 2025
  • ProjectWise

Drafting (PR)

Gathers data and translates engineering requirements into drawings as a design deliverable. Uses appropriate tools and follows standards, codes, company procedures and project requirements.
  • Proactively gathers data and information necessary for the design model or drawing
  • Interfaces with other team members and actively interprets requirements for the design model or drawing
  • Produces design models or drawings in accordance with standards, codes, requirements and procedures
  • Ensures the drawing deliverables represent the design solution

Design (MP)

The ability to recognize, interpret and apply relevant information for formulating sound engineering design solutions. The ability to conceptualize and create designs that consider constraints such as safety, customer/project requirements, design optimization, applicable codes and specifications, constructability, operations, maintenance and overall cost economics.
