1. Digital Oilfield Infrastructure Ownership
They lead the infrastructure that supports digital field operations, including: Field networks (fiber, microwave, LTE, satellite) , Edge computing platforms , Industrial servers , Data historians , SCADA systems , Real-time data acquisition , Cloud connectivity , Remote operations centers
Examples: Connecting surface facilities to onshore data centers , ensuring streaming telemetry data is available to operators , s upporting Predictive Maintenance and robust Digital Twins
2. OT / IT Integration
A major part of the job is bridging operational technology (OT) and corporate IT.
That includes integrating : SCADA , PLCs , DCS systems , Sensor networks , PI historians , Enterprise applications , Cloud analytics platforms
Common technologies include: PI System , DMZ , APIs , Data Lake , Industrial IoT gateways , Digital Twins
The lead ensures production data flows reliably and securely from the field into analytics and business systems.
3. Infrastructure Architecture
D efine technical architecture standards for: Field communications , Data centers , Edge comput ing, Redundancy , Disaster recovery , Hybrid cloud , OT network segmentation
4. Cybersecurity Leadership
The lead often works with cybersecurity teams on: OT network security , C ompliance , NIST alignment , Remote access security , Zero-trust architecture , Vulnerability management , Ransomware protection for industrial systems
5. Supporting Production Optimization
The infrastructure exists to enable operational value: Predictive maintenance , Production surveillance , Digital twins , Remote operations , AI/ML analytics , Automated workflows , Emissions monitoring
The infrastructure lead ensures the technology platform can support these digital initiatives reliably at scale.
6. Vendor & Project Management
They typically oversee: Systems integrators , Telecom vendors , Cloud providers , Industrial automation suppliers , Infrastructure contractors
And lead large capital projects such as: Digital oilfield rollouts , Smart field modernization , OT cloud migration , Unified operations centers
7. Team Leadership
Can be required to manage: Infrastructure engineers , OT engineers , Network specialists , SCADA support teams , Field IT teams , Vendors/contractors
May be responsible for contributing or leading on : Technical standards , Roadmaps , Incident management , Operational SLAs
