The China – Huabei District, Expat Surveyor position is focused primarily on survey after Construction survey work in Qingdao, Dalian areas as well as Tianjin, Yantai area. The primary responsibility is to carry out onboard survey for annual/special and occasional survey at yards and terminals. This position is primarily focused on marine vessels to include LNG/Gas Carrier, Container Ships, Tankers, and Bulk Carriers, as well as smaller vessel types as needed.
What You Will Do:
- Deal with statutory surveys and certification and where applicable liaise with Flag or Port State Surveyors based on marine engineering and naval architecture knowledge.
- Work with international marine rules and regulations. Responsible for project management involving marine surveys for survey after construction and shipping services.
- Discuss/present deliverables with the external client and be able to suggest alterative solutions where appropriate. Assess/recommend time/value of the work to be undertaken for an external client.
- Ability to work under pressure and independently.
- Familiar with class and statutory survey process, specially for tanker and CAP survey.
- Acts as a safety champion and ensures a high degree of safety awareness on the job with peers and clients
- by such developments. Recommends new approaches to problems encountered and makes changes in methods, procedures or design where necessary.
- In the course of surveyor attendance and as appropriate, promotes the services and capabilities of ABS to present and potential customers.
What You Will Need:
Education & Experience
- Internal candidates should have a minimum of three (3) years' experience working as an ABS Surveyor.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- A strong working knowledge of ABS Classification Rules, Guides, statutory regulations and related instructions, as well as the ABS Employee Safety Policy.
- A sound foundation of survey training and practical experience with vessels in service is preferred but not required
- Ability to work under pressure and independently
- Knowledge of various formats for completion of certificates.
- Ability to communicate orally, and in writing, on pertinent information relative to assigned area of technical expertise.
- Must be fluent in English both verbally and in writing at a business level.
- Ability to analyze problems and propose solutions.
- Must have a team oriented personality, be responsiveness to customers, and meticulous in details regarding survey requirements
- Must to be familiar with the ABS Quality & Environmental Management System and the ABS Safety Manual.
Reporting Relationships
Reports to a Principal Surveyor in Charge or senior level surveyor under the direction of a Principal Surveyor in Charge, or another leader as directed.

Working Conditions
This position is working at shipyard and terminal for onboard survey. Travel to and from survey sites as well as attendance onboard vessels and overtime is required.
Various work will be performed in close and confined spaces, and it will be necessary to climb vertical ladders of various heights, construction staging of various heights and unstaged steel structure up to three (3) meters. Use of small tools and the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), in accordance with SWZ-030-99-P07, are required.
