Job Summary and Purpose

The Electro Technical Officer (E.T.O.) provides electronic, electrical and communications expertise as an integrated member of the Engineering Department and on occasion, performs in the role of duty engineer.

ELECTRICAL, ELECTRONICS and MARINE ENGINEERING
• On first joining a ship, the E.T.O. must appraise the Chief Engineer Officer of his engineering qualifications and experience in maintaining and repairing electronic/electrical control equipment and associated electrical apparatus.
• The Chief Engineer Officer must in turn advise the E.T.O. of the extent of the electrical equipment installed on the ship and any items where his expertise is likely to be regularly required.
• Thereafter, the E.T.O. shall familiarize him with the electronic installation, paying special attention to equipment with which he is unfamiliar, or which the Chief Engineer Officer has advised may need his assistance.
• The E.T.O. shall work as directed by the Chief Engineer Officer, to undertake the testing, servicing, and maintenance of all electronic/electrical equipment.
• The E.T.O. is responsible for the maintenance of all electronic navigation aids and communication equipment.
• The E.T.O. shall carry out and record routine servicing and maintenance of all GMDSS and communication facilities and shall repair defects to the best of his abilities. The E.T.O. shall discuss all aspects of work with the Chief or Second Engineer Officer. When he is unable to repair defects fully and permanently, the E.T.O. shall advise the Chief Engineer Officer, and with his approval obtain advice and/or assistance from NSQL Office.
• The E.T.O. shall supervise and record all electrical service work carried out from shore, to ensure that the equipment is left in a fully operational condition. He shall check service engineer's timesheets and service reports for accuracy and ensure full details of parts supplied are recorded. Such details shall be advised to the Chief Engineer Officer, who shall ensure that copies of the reports, etc. are forwarded to NSQL Office.
• The E.T.O. shall maintain batteries and lifeboat radios as required by statute and keep related records in the Official Log.
• During refits, the E.T.O. shall supervise the work to be done on equipment within his care in order to ensure that the final result is satisfactory. The E.T.O. shall fully report to the Engineer Superintendent or his nominee via the Chief Engineer Officer. The E.T.O. shall also be responsible for the security of all equipment in his charge.
• The ETO must carry out any lawful command and delegated duty as issued by the Chief Engineer. and /or Master.
AS DUTY ENGINEER WHEN REQUIRED
In order to fulfil the role of duty engineer, the E.T.O. shall become familiar with the main propulsion and auxiliary plant and with its safe operation.

Carry out routine watchkeeping 24hrs in every 72hrs on ships operating an unmanned machinery space or on watch keeping ships keep an engine room watch.

Reverse power trips

Reversing, Cylinder lubrication, Performance measuring.

Routine maintenance, Emergency operation. Cylinder Liner oil retention, piston rings and quills.

Safety equipment

Steam driven cargo pumps, Frame systems.

Steering Gear, Evaporators, Air compressors, Hotel Services and Fridge systems. Purifiers and Clarifiers

Team building - How to train and guide subordinates

Testing of boiler trips etc.

Written and spoken English to high standard.
