JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Summary

Research and Development (R&D) lab technicians work within the development and research efforts of their organization. They generally work in a laboratory setting and performs the duties of qualifying and conducts testing/assembly to ensure that products are being tested/assembled correctly and per industry standards. The R&D Lab Technician follows prescribed procedure and conducts product performance testing and characterization. They oversee of gathering data, keeping accurate records, and making sure records are filled correctly. Each R&D Technician share ownership of every test/assembly outcome and oversee safe work practices in the lab. R&D Technicians provide support and is responsible for assisting a researcher or research team with product development projects.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Test and/or repair various new and older products using considerable independent judgment to ensure quality, correct parts, and/or proper procedures are used.
  • Build, repair, and/or test a variety of new and older products using standard and/or non- standard tools, equipment, and procedures.
  • Accurately record results and documentation for certification of product to customer requirements.
  • Read machine assembly specifications, such as charts and blueprints.
  • Complete various records and documentation.
  • Work on precision sub-assembly, assembly, or rework of parts involving a considerable number of details and independent judgment.
  • Perform other work related tasks as assigned.
  • Comply with all NOV Company and HSE policies and procedures.
FACILITY/GROUP SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Interpret and follow diagrams, blueprint, and procedures.
  • Operate a variety of manual machines and hand tools.
  • Knowledge of basic rigging and can operate equipment (Forklift, Crane, AWP, etc.) and specialized hand tools/ power tools.
  • Performs tasks associated with troubleshooting, testing, and assembling mechanical assemblies for drilling control systems for both surface and subsea applications.
  • Assists in configuring, preparing, maintaining, utilizing test stations and test equipment for factory and system acceptance testing such as hydrostatic pressure and flushing.
  • Setup, operates, test, repair and/or modify a variety of mechanical equipment, systems and devices.
  • Applies basic skills while developing specialized skills in procedures, operations, techniques, tools, materials, and/or equipment appropriate to area of specialization (mechanical); routine and/or repetitive tasks; limited decision making; generally, close supervision; no or limited experience; work is performed from within specific limits of established procedures and/or defined instructions.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • Two or more years of experience assembling, and testing oilfield equipment preferred
  • 0-6 months in related field preferred
  • Knowledge of oil& gas field components preferred
JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical demands described are: Able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Proper Personnel Protective Equipment will be worn in designated areas at all times

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

Hydraulics (Awareness)- Have a basic understanding of hydraulic principals including pressure, flow, and fluid power. The technician will be able to identify industrial standard drawings and symbols as well as be able to read the drawings and determine details related to the components and how they interconnect to other components and functions. The technician must be able to perform basic hydraulic interconnections and is able to take simple parts apart, clean, inspect, repair broke parts, reassemble and test the functionality of parts.

Mechanics (Awareness)- Have a basic understanding of mechanical principals including force, work, energy, power, torque, and motion. The technician will be able to identify industrial standard drawings and symbols as well as be able to read the drawings and determine details related to the components and how they interconnect to other components and functions. The technician must be able to take simple parts apart, clean, inspect, repair broke parts, reassemble and test the functionality of parts.

Safety (Awareness)- Understand the NOV's safety policy and that every employee has the authority and responsibility to stop any job or process that is being conducted in an unsafe manner. The technician must be able to secure straps and other rigging devices in moving heavy or dangerous materials with proper guidance in a safe manner. The technician must complete the safety orientation as well as any other required safety training.

Testing (Awareness)- Knows a piece of hydraulic equipment must go through quality control testing and has an idea of the process from command to action what needs to happen on a machine.
