Phillips 66 & YOU - Together we can fuel the future

APPLICANT MUST BE ENROLLED IN AN INSTRUMENT TECHNICIAN ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE PROGRAM. APPLICANTS MUST MAINTAIN A MINIMUM OF A 2.0 GPA ON A 4.0 SCALE. THE PHILLIPS 66 CO-OP PROGRAM IS LIMITED TO 7 WEEKS.

The Instrument Technician Co-op will participate in the Sweeny Refinery Craft Student Program which provides opportunities for career success through hands-on learning experiences. Students apply subject matter knowledge learned in a certificate or associate program to the workplace and develop technical and interpersonal skills in the workplace. It is important for student Co-op to participate as contributing and active members of their craft team. Co-op are expected to effectively communicate with all levels of the team and to ask questions that facilitate learning while respecting the professional demands and experience of their co-workers.

The Co-op will generally occur over the summer beginning in June. The work schedule for the Co-op program is a minimum of 20 hours each week up to 40 hours per week with no overtime. Workdays are generally 8 hours and scheduled Monday - Friday. Co-Op participants will be classified as non-represented temporary employees and will be paid $17/hour.

Co-op participants will be assigned a mentor and will receive training, experience, and work responsibilities in their craft. They are expected to actively participate in their respective Craft team, participate in conversations, and ask questions to develop personal learning and gain workplace experience. Participation in or completion of the Co-op does not guarantee future regular full-time employment with Phillips 66. Before the Co-op participant begins their role in the field, they will receive basic orientation that includes HR and Safety related topics. A training plan with the Co-op requirements will also be covered.

Responsibilities May Include:

• Shadow and support experienced employees while effectively following all safety, health, environmental, maintenance, and operation practices and procedures
• Learn about health, safety and environmental hazards
• Witness the Permit to Work process
• Witness energy isolation (e.g. Lock, Tag & Try)
• Learn how to recognize and report incidents and near-misses
• In addition to the above, the Craft Co-op may:
• Attend daily crew meetings
• Learn how to apply craft skills in the refinery
• Witness work being performed by experienced craftsman based off of weekly maintenance work schedule
• While learning on the job (and practicing when possible), students are expected to:
• Stop unsafe work or practices
• Demonstrate work-related knowledge
• Work well on diverse teams
• Effectively use multiple information sources
• Demonstrate cooperative and active participation in activities
• Show a willingness and enthusiasm to learn

Required Qualifications:

• Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions
• Maintain a valid driver's license
• High School Diploma or GED equivalent
• Currently enrolled in an accredited Instrumentation or Electronics Associate's Degree Program or equivalent at a post-secondary educational institution with only one academic year remaining to be completed in the program
• Currently hold and able to maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA each semester
• Willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to perform/comply with the following:
  • Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines
  • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
  • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toed shoes, ear/eye protection)
  • Maintain your face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly, if applicable (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
  • Work outside in harsh weather conditions

Preferred Qualifications:

• Computer proficiency with Excel, Word, and SAP
• Use of good judgment and the ability to make decisions independently
• Able to comprehend and follow instructions
• Skills in effective communication and teamwork
• Able to interpret and evaluate data and detect problems

The Sweeny Refinery is located in Old Ocean, Texas. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization, and aromatics units, as well as access to the on-site vacuum tower and delayed coking unit, which is an asset owned by Phillips 66 Partners. Sweeny processes heavy, high-sulfur crude oil and some light, low sulfur crude oil. Domestic, Canadian and other foreign crude oil is transported by truck, pipeline, marine transportation and terminals. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feedstocks, heating oil and petroleum coke. The refinery receives crude oil by pipeline and via tankers, through terminals on the Gulf Coast, including a deepwater terminal at Freeport. Refined products are distributed throughout the Midcontinent region, southeastern and eastern United States by pipeline, barge and rail car. Refined products are also exported to Latin America by waterborne cargo.
