Come be part of the Asset Technical Department of ExxonMobil Canada Energy. Our offices are located on the East Coast of Canada in St. John's, Newfoundland with a workforce of nearly 250 people and two world class offshore production assets.

What role you will play in our team

Seeking engineering co-op students for our upstream operations in Newfoundland. Students will have the opportunity to support two world-class offshore facilities, Hibernia and Hebron, and will be working alongside some of the most talented Engineers in the industry. Each student will receive a dedicated mentor experienced in your assigned area and will receive work items which are integral to our safe and reliable offshore operations.

The selected individuals also will work at our new, open-concept office in St. John's, Newfoundland, a space which is focused on collaboration, efficiency, safety and fun! Our St. John's office boasts a brand new gym facility, free parking, and a large eating area on each floor to socialize with your peers and meet others in the building. The building also has several areas with advanced remote operations capabilities, enabled by an onshore to offshore fiber-optic link. This opens up some truly unique experiences for our students where they can observe and support real-time production, drilling and logistics operations, seeing the immediate impact they can make from 350km away!

What you will do

Potential positions could include:
Hibernia and/or Hebron Asset Engineering Assistant

As a part of the Asset Technical Engineering team(s), you will be supporting day-to-day operations with a broad range of responsibilities covering anything from daily process optimization to brownfield project development. Work environment and tasks will be technical and exciting, including items such as:
  • Interacting with Operations, Maintenance and other Engineers to collaboratively address key technical and business priorities
  • Optimizing and troubleshooting using computer modeling of oil, gas, and water pipeline networks and facilities
  • Applying innovative ideas and digital solutions to the continuous improvement of offshore operations
  • Facilitating scoping, cost estimating, scheduling and execution of facilities projects
  • Analyzing of production data to characterize flow behavior.
  • Analyzing options for improving production, product quality, efficiency and safety
  • Assisting the technical team in implementing effective solutions to health, safety, and environmental improvements
  • Reviewing and compiling information from engineering standards and other resources
  • Participating in technical reviews of engineering documentation and construction drawings
  • Assisting in Hazard and Operability Studies and other risk analyses

Facility Integrity Engineering Assistant
As a part of the Facility Integrity Engineering team(s), you will be supporting items such as near and long-term equipment integrity management, troubleshooting, and reliability assurance, among other opportunities. Expect broad technical exposure to various Engineering disciplines, working alongside subject matter experts, including potential options in Mechanical, Civil, Process, and/or Electrical. Tasks may include items such as:
  • Interacting with Operations, Maintenance and other Engineers to collaboratively address key technical and business priorities.
  • Supporting effective implementation, application and continuous improvement of the Facility Integrity Management Program, including consideration of how advances in technology can be leveraged to improve the operation.
  • Identifying improvement opportunities, articulate technical / business challenges, and provide technical solutions.
  • Completing Engineering studies to address reliability or integrity issues, including preliminary scoping, cost estimating, scheduling and working economics for projects related to safety, reliability, optimization or facility integrity.
  • Participating in project development utilizing Engineering practices, processes, tools and procedures
  • Assisting the technical team in implementing effective solutions to health, safety, and environmental issues
  • Assisting in Hazard and Operability Studies and other risk analyses

Drilling & Wellwork Engineering Assistant

As a part of the Wells team, you will be supporting Drilling and/or Wellwork operations. Tasks will be dynamic and fast-paced supporting active rig-lines, wellwork programs, and upgrades projects, where safety, efficiency, and continuous improvement are key in delivering on team objectives. Tasks may include items such as:
  • Real-time monitoring of active drill wells, including cost/time performance, drilling fluid properties, directional profile progress and torque/drag
  • Analyzing and optimizing various drilling rig components
  • Modeling of drilling fluid networks and facilities
  • Assisting Drilling and Wellwork operations in real-time technical problem solving and troubleshooting
  • Implementing effective solutions to health, safety and environmental issues
  • Evaluating drilling alternatives and proposal of recommended practices
  • Reviewing and evaluating wells to identify opportunities to improve production or lower costs
  • Generating well cost estimates for performing remedial/diagnostic wellwork
  • Running modeling software to better understand well design and performance

Development Engineering Assistant

As a part of the Development Engineering team, you will be working with cross functional teams including reservoir and production engineers, offshore operations, project engineering, drilling and geoscience to assist in the identification and capture of near and long term value. Tasks may include items such as:
  • Support reservoir engineers with the identification of opportunities to enhance asset performance while maintaining regulatory obligations
  • Support the development of reservoir simulation models to evaluate depletion plans and apply fundamental reservoir engineering skills in reservoir characterization, development planning, fluid analysis, and secondary recovery for optimal asset development
  • Identify key reservoir uncertainties and provide recommendations to mitigate development risks
  • Integrate available data with geoscientists and other engineers (reservoir, production, and facilities) to develop technically sound subsurface recommendations
  • Support engineers in technology development (digital and other technologies) across facility and subsurface workflows
  • Support the coordination and management of technology opportunities and the efforts of Company, IT and Contractors to meet objectives

Projects Engineering Assistant

As a part of the Eastern Canadian Projects team, you will be working with engineers throughout the company as well as our Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Maintenance (EPCM) Contractors to execute safety, reliability, and volumes uplift projects on each of the Hibernia and Hebron platforms. Tasks may include items such as:
  • Support the coordination and management of Projects and the efforts of Company and Contractors to meet project objectives
  • Monitor and appraise contractor's planning, execution and controls
  • Coordinate Company review requirements (e.g. HAZOP, constructability, operability, and maintenance)
  • Interface with Company (i.e. SMEs) and Contractor resources for resolution of project issues
  • Develop Project Management deliverables and obtain appropriate sign offs
  • Support the preparation of Gate and Check Point packages and leads review meetings including required follow-up
  • Review and condition contractor estimates to use as inputs into project estimates
  • Coordinate required AFEs, purchase orders, requisitions, etc. and monitor and control project cost and schedule
  • Steward MOCs through project execution and coordinate project close out activities

Risk & Operations Integrity Engineering Assistant

As a part of the Safety Security Health Environment (SSHE) and External Affairs team, you will be supporting day-to-day operations with a broad range of responsibilities in areas such as safety engineering, operations integrity, risk analysis, and sustainability. Work environment and tasks will be technical and exciting, including items such as:
  • Interacting with Hibernia and Hebron Engineering, Operations, Maintenance and Wells teams to collaboratively address key operations integrity, technical and business priorities
  • Contributing to risk analyses such as risk screenings, HAZOPS, quantitative risk assessment processes
  • Supporting the real time understanding of critical safeguard health related to higher consequence process safety scenarios
  • Supporting the development of Regulatory Query Forms, including the review and compilation of regulations, technical standards, and other resources
  • Supporting the engagement with the Certifying Authority to maintain the Certificates of Fitness
  • Supporting sustainability and emission reduction efforts including contributing to projects reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and improving environmental reporting methodologies
  • Identifying improvement opportunities, articulate operations integrity challenges, and provide technical solutions

Skills and Qualifications
  • University Engineering student available for a work term beginning in September 2024
  • Currently enrolled in a University Engineering program and returning to full-time studies after the work term

Preferred Qualifications/ Experience
  • Strong communication skills, including interface with internal and external stakeholders and contractors
  • Commitment to safety on and off the job
  • Excellent computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to work with a minimal supervision and in a team-based environment
  • Previous petroleum industry experience is considered beneficial, but not essential
  • Demonstrated leadership and strong academic skills
  • Initiative, independence and accountability for tasks and understanding impacts on the business
  • Work schedule: Full Time
