JOB DESCRIPTION

The Thermal Process Engineer (Applications) will be an integral part of Wood's goals to make fired heaters "future-ready' through various applications such as increased efficiency, hydrogen fuel firing, electrification and carbon capture. Ideally, the Thermal Process Engineer (Applications) would sit out of our Hampton, NJ office, but for the right candidate, we will consider remote or out of state options

In this role, you will perform assignments under the supervision of a more experienced engineer, applying engineering knowledge and experience to prepare design calculations for fired heaters and perform other engineering tasks using prescribed methods and procedures. A self-motivated individual, interested in technical work and supporting proposal development, will thrive in this environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Utilize heat transfer principles and internal design methodologies to prepare thermal and hydraulic design for equipment in the Fired Heater product line (Coker heaters, SMRs, Crude & Vacuum, CO Boilers, etc.).
  • Develop thermal design calculations to support proposals, technical studies and development initiatives.
  • Execute thermal studies and prepares technical reports. Support technical and commercial efforts to implement recommendations with the customer.
  • Prepare and maintain fired heater and other ancillary equipment datasheets. Prepare sketches as necessary to illustrate preliminary heater layouts.
  • Review technical portions of client inquiry documents including requisitions and project specifications.
  • Compose technical proposals and other related technical supporting documentation in response to client inquiry.
  • Prepare preliminary technical specifications and solicits budget pricing from equipment vendors for items such as process burners, recuperative air preheaters, centrifugal fans, pumps, steam drums, etc.
  • Review vendor quotations for completeness relative to client inquiry requirements and design basis.
  • Prepare and assist in developing equipment specifications, inquiry and purchase requisitions. Review formal vendor bids for technical compliance with contract requirements during contract execution.
  • Compose commercial proposals following prescribed templates and guidelines Develop a basic understanding of contract requirements and commercial terms.
  • Meet with customers to discuss technical information and features.
  • Participate in reviews of PFDs and P&IDs.
  • Provide input and assistance to estimating, scheduling, design engineering, project execution, etc.
  • Participate in plant start-ups, kick-off meetings, data gathering and equipment trouble shooting.
  • Position will require occasional trips to the field, such as entering various plants and fabrication shop visits.
QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in related field.
  • Experience with fired heaters, steam systems or similar thermal processes.
  • E.I.T. or P.E. certification is a plus, but not required.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from clients, designers/engineers and suppliers
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations
  • Must be a US Citizen or authorized to work lawfully in the US, without sponsorship from Wood.
