General Responsibilities

Performs a variety of advanced Master level, and lead tasks associated with the installation, modification and repair of commercial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) controls and equipment; serves as crew leader; performs related work as required. This is the lead master's level of the HVAC Mechanic trades series. Many maintenance tasks are performed at schools, centers, and offices while others are performed in a shop or fixed site. Work is usually carried out within the framework of well-defined procedures, but some independent judgement is exercised to complete assigned tasks.

License/Certification

Certificate of Asbestos Training.

Masters HVAC Mechanical Certification (state).

Master Gas Fitter Certificate (state).

Level 2 psi Natural Gas Certificate (Virginia Natural Gas Company) and manufacturers certifications to repair specific equipment as necessary.

Possession of an appropriate, valid automotive vehicle operator's license.

Essential Job Functions
  • Oversee and participate in the work of a small group of employees engaged in performing a variety of skilled journey level refrigeration/HVAC duties on the interior and exterior of buildings, installing, repairing, and maintaining commercial non boiler fired heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems and associated equipment in accordance with building, mechanical, plumbing, fire and electrical codes and other federal, state, and local safety or engineering agency guidelines.
  • Performs water analysis and chemical treatment of chiller and cooling towers in both open and closed loop systems; operates and maintains hand and power tools, including volt, ohm and amperage meters, temperature, and humidity test equipment, freon and other gas leak detectors, scales, and pressure gauges, freon charging and recovery equipment, and brazing, arc and gas welding equipment.
  • Troubleshoots, tests, repairs, maintains, or modifies HVAC systems (up to 720 tons) and equipment including, but not limited to, piping, tubing and related freon and gas pressure systems, duct work, and electrical and gas control panels.
  • Uses ladders and scaffolding; ensures proper maintenance of tools and other electrical equipment; ensures safety of the work area.
  • Drives a vehicle to and from work locations and keeps vehicle supplied with tools and materials; performs operator maintenance on vehicle and keeps it in orderly condition.
  • Keeps records and makes reports of work accomplished and materials used.
