The City of Schertz Public Works Department provides quality services to the Schertz community in a number of areas, including street maintenance, solid waste, water/wastewater, drainage and storm water management, to ensure Schertz is kept safe, clean, livable and enjoyable. The Water / Wastewater division serves over 13,000 customers in homes, businesses, and schools. Water / Wastewater is responsible for operation and maintenance of 211 miles of water mains and 98 miles of sanitary sewer lines. POSITION SUMMARY:
This is an unskilled to semi-skilled position involved in the construction, installation, maintenance, and repairs of city water distribution system and sewer collection system. This position is not responsible for the preparation of records and reports, has daily contact with the public requiring diplomacy and tact; makes few decisions, mostly of simple nature. Always maintains a professional and mature attitude, willingness to help others, participates in "ON JOB TRAINING" and "SAFETY PROGRAMS". Has no supervisory responsibility.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Loads and unloads water and sewer construction materials and bench stock supplies.
• Excavates and back-fills, trenches utilizing excavation tools and equipment.
• Cleans and performs simple maintenance and repairs on fire hydrants, blow off valves, valve boxes, control valves, lift station and well sites.
• Operates power tools and light construction equipment.
• Performs rough painting, carpentry, concrete work, plumbing repairs and minor electrical work.
• Operates ground maintenance hand equipment.
• Operates pickup trucks, tractors, air compressor, and sewer cleaner.
• Maintain vegetation control and good housekeeping tactics at lift stations, water well sites, and storage facilities.
• Assists with meter reading, repairs water and wastewater breaks, clean sewer lines, and installation of water and sewer mains.
• Performs minor maintenance on vehicles, backhoes, lawn mowers, pumps, and small motors.
• Assists other Public Works Divisions and City Departments when requested.
• Familiarization with City of Schertz Code of Ordinance, subdivision codes, water & wastewater standards and specification codes and TCEQ Rules and Regulations and AWWA Standards.
• May be called in on emergencies calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
• Good Housekeeping and organization of tools, equipment, vehicles and work area.
• Performs other duties as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
• High School Diploma or GED equivalent
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Must have above average communication skills in both verbal and written form.
• Requires basic knowledge of construction equipment, ground maintenance equipment and powered/non-powered hand tools.
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
• Have or be able to obtain a valid "B" Texas Commercial driver's license within six (6) months of hire.
• Must have or be able to obtain a Class "D" Water Operator License and a Wastewater Collection Operator I License within twelve (12) months of hire.
• Must upgrade Class "D" water license to Class "C" groundwater treatment operator prior to expiration of Class "D" water license.
• Must upgrade water/wastewater collection operator I prior to water/wastewater collection operator II license prior to expiration of collection operator I.
