This position in Pima County's Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department (RWRD) works on-call and rotating shifts operating and maintaining systems and facilities that convey, treat, and reclaim over 62 million gallons per day of wastewater, protecting public health and the environment. Through this reclamation process, water, biosolids, nutrients, and methane gas are recovered as renewable resources. As an Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Technician Supervisor II you will be responsible for safely operating and monitoring selected equipment involved in the treatment, processing, and resource reclamation of wastewater and biosolids. The selected candidate will ensure the continuity of operations by assigning and performing preventative maintenance and adjustments to equipment and systems including pumps, motors, blowers, chemical feed equipment, sludge equipment, and basic laboratory equipment.

The O&M Supervisor II participates in O&M functions and tasks in connection with the O&M of Pima County's Regional Wastewater Treatment Facilities and/or other independent, remote wastewater treatment sites. This is full supervisory position that oversees the WW O&M Technicians and multiple advanced treatment processes. Duties/Responsibilities

  • Supervises and monitors treatment facilities;
  • Provides dispatch services and performs miscellaneous activities for the collection/conveyance system;
  • Compiles data/information and prepares reports to management;
  • Utilizes the SCADA system to remotely operate equipment;
  • Supervises and assists in monitoring, evaluating and troubleshooting treatment plant and collection/conveyance system processes;
  • Initiates the implementation of emergency procedures;
  • Responds to requests for information/documentation from other County departments, local, state and federal agencies;
  • Responds to calls/complaints from the public.

Minimum Qualifications

(1) Possess a current Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Grade 3 (or higher)Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification and five years of water or wastewater plant operating and maintenance experience or other comparable industrial/process equipment operation and maintenance.

(2) Possess a current Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Grade 3 (or higher) Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification and three years at Pima County as a Wastewater Operations & Maintenance Technician.(Possession of PCRWRD Operations 2 (O2) and Maintenance 2 (M2) certifications may substitute for up to five years of the requisite experience.)

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):

  1. Trade 4 ADEQ Wastewater Treatment System Operator certification, and a Grade 2 Wastewater Collection System Operator certification (or higher) at the time of hire.
  2. Minimum five (5) years of experience with at least one (1) year as a supervisor in the operation of an advanced, complex wastewater/water facility (Grade 3 or 4 wastewater facility).
  3. Experience with/knowledge of SCADA and HMI systems to locate and obtain information, perform trending analysis, and generate reports.
  4. Experience in supervising, monitoring, evaluating, and troubleshooting treatment plant and conveyance system processes.
  5. Experience with/knowledge of reading and interpreting technical data.
Selection Procedure:
Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum/desired qualifications. Supplemental Information

Licenses and Certificates: Valid driver license is required at time of application. ValidAZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant's suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services' review and approval of the candidate's driving record. Some positions may require possession of a current Certificate of Registration to practice as a Registered Sanitarian in the State of Arizona at the time of appointment or prior to completion of initial/promotional probation. Some positions require a valid Arizona Class D driver license at the time of application. Failure to obtain/maintain the required licensure/certification/registration shall be grounds for termination.

Special Notice Items: Some positions may require work in remote or limited access areas and terrain exposed to dust and pollen; work for prolonged periods in extreme heat, cold, moisture and humidity; occasional use of protective equipment due to potential exposure to hazardous substances, i.e., asbestos. Some positions may require preventative immunizations such as Hepatitis and Tetanus Some positions within this classification that are not covered by the requirements of OSHA's Blood Borne Pathogen program may be offered, at County expense, the Hepatitis B series of vaccinations due to potential exposure to raw sewage and sharps (discarded needles/syringes). The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County.

Physical/Sensory Requirements: Some positions may require standing or walking for extended periods of time (up to two hours); physical and sensory requirements consistent with the employees' need to routinely and safely operate a motor vehicle in all weather conditions and on different road surfaces.
