Location:

Abingdon, Oxfordshire

Descripti on & Scope:

There is a well-known, yet unresolved problem of mismatch between simulation prediction and actual results on injectivity of polymers for enhanced oil recovery.

Often the blame is on development of micro-fractures and then hydraulic fractures at high pressures near wells due to the viscous flow of polymers. The reservoir simulator Intersect cannot model development of microfractures and fractures by itself.

However, in coupling with geomechanics simulator Visage, and Embedded Discrete Fracture Model (EDFM) tool, it would be possible to include these geological processes into simulation, and, hence, explain the observed mismatch between modeling and field data.

The project will include:

  • Research into model for micro-fracture (MF) formation at high stress at geomechanics compaction. The model could be potentially found in literature, otherwise the base principles of it will be derived.
  • Integration of the geomechanics MF model into simulation workflow. Methods of speeding up the simulation by exploring Visage sector modeling will be implemented.
  • Automated hydraulic fracture activation to be achieved by using EDFM workflow
  • Running client models and comparing their field results with the MF workflow prediction

Deliverables:

Well-rounded piece of research into geomechanics, reservoir, and software engineering. You will:

  • Propose new geomechanics model for micro-fracturing
  • Establish the process of development of MF into hydraulic fractures
  • Provide explanation for the mismatch between field data and prediction results
  • Possible outcomes will be reports to the clients, conference submissions, papers.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Studying for a Masters' Degree in Reservoir Engineering, Geomechanics or similar
  • Programming Skills in Python or C++
  • Mathematics
