JOB SUMMARY:
The City of Birmingham is seeking a well qualified and motivated Plumbing, Gas and Mechanical Inspector for their Building Inspections Department. Plumbing, Gas and Mechanical Inspectors in Birmingham inspect a variety of plumbing, gas and mechanical installations. Incumbents work and consult with contractors, engineers, plumbers, gas fitters and HVAC technicians regarding various installations and review plans and specifications to ensure compliance with established codes. Plumbing, Gas and Mechanical Inspectors attempt to schedule multiple types of inspections during the same visit to increase efficiency. Incumbents maintain inspection records, and work independently in both office and field settings. Decisions made require independent judgment, and work is subject to periodic checks and reviews by their supervisor.

- Possess 2 of the 3 Certification/Journeyman or Master cards:
- Plumber card from Alabama State Board of Plumbers and Gas Fitters Examining Board.
- Gas Fitters card from Alabama State Board of Plumbers and Gas Fitters Examining Board.
- HVAC license from State Board of Alabama Heating, Air Conditioning Contractors.
Option B:
- Driver's license.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university.
- HVAC license from State Board of Alabama Heating, Air Conditioning Contractors.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by Birmingham. These qualifications may be considered by Birmingham when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.
- Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering.
- Possess all 3 (Journeyman or Master) Certifications:
- Plumber certification from Alabama Plumbers & Gas Fitters Examining Board.
- Gas Fitters certification from Alabama Plumbers & Gas Fitters Examining Board.
- HVAC certification from the Alabama Board of Heating, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Contractors.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
- Enforces codes and ordinances by showing/explaining codes and ordinances to contractors to ensure compliance and safety.
- Interprets codes and ordinances for construction professionals and the general public by reviewing pertinent codes and ordinances to clarify information.
- Conducts gas inspections by checking for gas leaks, ensuring vent lines are properly installed, and calculating BTUs of gas piping system to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
- Conducts general inspection activities by scheduling inspections, ensuring fees are paid, and verifying building permits have been issued so inspections are completed in a timely manner.
- Conducts inspections related to life safety, handicap accessibility, and natural disasters by comparing aspects of construction to code requirements to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
- Conducts mechanical inspections by comparing aspects of construction to code requirements to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
- Reviews plans by comparing aspects of the plans to code and ordinance requirements to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
- Conducts plumbing inspections by comparing aspects of construction to code requirements to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
- Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines to upgrade procedures and improve work performance.
- Maintains inspection records by filing, researching, and documenting records, calculating fees and preparing for court cases so records are organized and readily available when needed.
- Ensures knowledge is current by researching and reviewing codes, ordinances, notices, and permitting so accurate information can be provided to others.
