SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Facility Manager, the HVAC Technician maintains, repairs and installs refrigeration, heating and air conditioning and ventilation systems in the facility. Makes connections to new and used equipment, removes and replaces defective parts and equipment relative to refrigeration and air conditioning; tests equipment to comply with safety regulations, working with blueprints, wiring diagrams and written and oral instructions; cleans and makes minor repairs to motors, controls and some allied electrical equipment; answers emergency calls on breakdowns. Gives special attention to proper grounding of electrical equipment and apparatus.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following, (other duties may be assigned):
  • Inspects, tests and repairs refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
  • Installs new and/or used refrigeration and air conditioning equipment using blueprints, drawings and diagrams to ascertain layouts, locations and specifications of items to be installed, estimating quantities of materials needed and preparing requisitions.
  • Performs minor painting, electrical wiring, carpentry, welding, related in this field and relative to facility equipment.
  • Makes minor repairs in steam fitting necessary to the maintenance of absorption equipment.
  • Makes minor repairs to electrical motors.
  • Assists factory mechanics in installations and repair of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
  • Periodically tests, inspects, cleans and repairs other facility equipment.
  • Lubricates compressors, motors and other moving parts.
  • Maintains and repairs all drinking fountains.
  • Maintains proper belt adjustment.
  • Maintains and repairs locks on refrigerators, and gaskets on refrigerator doors.
  • Maintains and repairs window unit air conditioners.
  • Installs refrigerator units when needed.
  • Observes the safety regulations and policies of the facility.
  • Keeps informed of new procedures and requirements, in coordination with facility policies and procedures.
  • Participates in training programs for maintenance personnel.
  • Maintains a high standard of personal appearance.
  • Performs other tasks or assignments as directed by the Manager.
  • Participates in all department training.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Prior HVAC experience is required.

COMPUTER SKILLS:

Basic Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook Web, and other computer knowledge.

LANGUAGE ABILITY:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively speak and understand English.

MATH ABILITY:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in liquid units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems related to the job. Ability to follow both written and oral instructions from managers and supervisors. Must be able to demonstrate correct use of chemicals, supplies and tools assigned. Must be able to operate mechanical equipment, once trained, and detect equipment malfunctions.

No certifications needed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
