A Mechanical Designer specializing in pipe routing for power generation plays a crucial role in ensuring the efficient and safe operation of power plants. They are responsible for designing the layout and arrangement of piping systems that transport various fluids, including water, steam, fuels, and gases, throughout the plant as well as general arrangement of equipment.

Key responsibilities

• Develop detailed piping designs and layouts: Utilizing Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software, such as AutoCAD Plant 3D, REVIT, or Navisworks Manage, or to create intelligent 3D models of piping systems, equipment, and support structures.

• Generate isometric and orthographic drawings: Create accurate 2D representations or isometric views of the piping systems for fabrication and installation purposes.

• Ensure code compliance and adherence to standards: Apply relevant industry codes (e.g., ASME B31 series for power piping and process piping) and project specifications to guarantee the safety, reliability, and functionality of the piping systems.

• Coordinate with other disciplines: Collaborate with engineers (mechanical, electrical, civil, etc.) and other designers to ensure seamless integration of the piping systems with the overall plant design.

• Perform design calculations and analyses: Conduct calculations for pipe sizing, thickness, pump sizing, and other parameters to optimize system performance and safety.

• Identify and resolve clashes: Utilize clash detection tools in 3D modeling software to identify and resolve interferences between piping systems and other plant components.

• Prepare material take-offs and cost estimates: Generate accurate lists of materials required for the piping systems to facilitate procurement and cost estimation.

Essential skills and qualifications

• Proficiency in CAD software: Expertise in 2D and 3D CAD platforms relevant to piping design.

• Strong understanding of piping systems: In-depth knowledge of different pipe types, fittings, valves, and other components, along with their characteristics and applications.

• Knowledge of engineering principles: Basic understanding of fluid dynamics, material science, and pipe stress analysis principles to inform design decisions.

• Familiarity with industry codes and standards: Ability to interpret and apply codes and standards specific to power generation piping systems.

• Attention to detail and accuracy: Meticulous approach to design and drafting to ensure precise and error-free deliverables.

• Strong communication and collaboration skills: Ability to work effectively within multi-disciplinary teams and communicate technical information clearly.

• Educational background: An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Drafting and Design Technology, CAD Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related field is preferred. Experience in the field may be considered in lieu of a degree.
