About the Role:
VPS is seeking a Geotechnical Drill Rig Operator to join our growing Environmental and Geotechnical Services team. This role involves operating and maintaining drilling equipment used for soil borings, environmental sampling, and geotechnical investigations. The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, safety-focused, and comfortable working outdoors in varying field conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate geotechnical drill rigs (e.g., CME, Diedrich, or equivalent) to collect soil and groundwater samples
- Perform drilling for soil borings, monitoring well installations, and other subsurface investigations
- Conduct standard penetration testing (SPT), auger drilling, and rock coring
- Assist with site preparation, equipment setup, and mobilization/demobilization
- Ensure proper sample collection, labeling, and handling in accordance with project and regulatory requirements
- Perform daily equipment inspections, routine maintenance, and minor repairs
- Work closely with engineers and field staff to support project needs and timelines
- Maintain accurate field logs and documentation of drilling activities
- Adhere strictly to safety procedures and company policies
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- 1+ year of drill rig operation or heavy equipment operation experience preferred
- CDL Class A or B preferred (or ability to obtain)
- Mechanical aptitude and familiarity with basic drilling tools and procedures
- Willingness to travel locally for project work and occasionally stay overnight
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work in various outdoor conditions
- OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification is a plus (or willingness to obtain)
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail
