Position Purpose

About the Opportunity:

Shell Canada is seeking a Unit Inspector Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) to join their Shell Scotford Mechanical Engineering team.

This team member maintains the integrity of pressure equipment at Scotford manufacturing facilities. The role manages aspects of NDE, inspection, materials, welding, quality control, quality assurance, equipment design, procedure review, and creating/updating pressure equipment standards and specifications. In addition, the Pressure Equipment Integrity Inspector provides technical support to asset teams on medium and long term (> 90 days) operational and equipment problems. This position ensures all pressure equipment is designed, fabricated, examined, inspected, operated, maintained, altered, and repaired in a manner that provides integrity conforming to required regulations and standards. They advocate for Pressure Equipment Safety and strive towards ZERO LEAKS. Inspectors proactively improve and execute the site pressure equipment integrity management system and work processes.

Accountabilities:
  • Provide direction, monitor the progression, and review/ challenge reporting of non-destructive examination (NDE) in Scotford
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute integrity inspections, assessments, recommendations and monitoring requirements
  • Assure the implementation of the Pressure Equipment Integrity Management (PEIM) program including but is not limited to
    • Preparation of Inspection Plans and maintenance of the Integrity Management System (IMS)
    • Assessment, analysis, optimization, and documentation of Inspection results
    • Support plant corrosion manual reviews and Risk Based Inspection (RBI) assessments
    • Develop piping and equipment repair plans and ensure their adherence to API, ASME, and jurisdictional requirements outside of the 90-day window
    • Technical review and support of management of change (MOC) work, equipment re-rating, fitness for service evaluations and remaining life assessments
  • Support scoping team with scope readiness for turnarounds and other maintenance activities
  • Manage the placement, monitoring, and RBI assessment of condition monitoring locations (CMLs) on equipment and piping, while optimizing to assure integrity and efficiency
  • Support troubleshooting failures and provide recommendations for repair / replacement based on materials failure analysis and causal analysis
  • Provide technical PEI support to site operating and maintenance personnel to ensure production related items are resolved urgently
  • Input to annual budget process for integrity/inspection issues
  • Work collaboratively with our customers and stakeholders in Production, Maintenance, Projects, Turnaround, Engineering and Technology teams

Requirements:
  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
  • Technical Diploma in materials engineering technology or related discipline is preferred
  • Minimum of 5+ years of professional experience at petrochemical or other industrial sites
  • Working experience in Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) or Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) 2 in Ultrasonic Testing/ Radiographic Testing (UT/RT) is preferred
  • Knowledge of advanced NDE techniques in Ultrasonic/ Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (UT/ PAUT) is a plus
  • Must hold or able to obtain any of these certification API 510, 570, 653 and ABSA In-service Pressure Equipment (Boiler) Inspector
  • Must have solid working knowledge of pressure equipment design, corrosion mechanisms, codes & standards, inspection techniques, welding, metallurgy and process safety
  • Knowledge in the application of RBI is a plus
  • May be required to fill a reserve worker role
