Your role and responsibilities:

We are looking for a professional with long experience in technology and product R&D to strengthen our technology team working on ABB Ability™ Marine Pilot Decision at ABB, Marine & Ports.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in control engineering, motion planning, mathematics and computer science, with experience from the maritime industry and in developing algorithms for automated/autonomous vessels. The successful candidate will play a key and leadership role in the development of Marine Pilot Family products and a part of the bridge solutions portfolio.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to contribute significantly to successful project results in technology, software, product, and/or solution development, as well as associated Intellectual Property (IP).

Ideally the candidates are located and have permit to work in one of the main operational locations in Finland, Sweden, Norway, or Poland. Other locations can be considered on a case by case basis.

The work model for the role is: hybrid/remote.

This role is contributing to the global ABB Marine & Ports division and Business Line Marine Systems.

You will be mainly accountable for:
  • Understanding of product and functionality requirements
  • Design, development, and implementation related to automatic and autonomous vessel navigation functionality in the ABB Ability™ Marine Pilot Family
  • Ensure product functionality, performance, reliability, and scalability
  • Product documentation
  • Collaborate with other teams and stakeholders who are developing software, control algorithm, UI/UX team as well as other relevant stakeholders, such as Project Engineering team.
  • Contribute to the technology planning and collaboration with internal ABB Corporate Research Centers and global Universities / Research Centers to further advance our technology
  • If required, provide support for challenging customer project deliveries

Qualifications for the role:
  • Master's / PhD degree in control engineering, marine cybernetics, robotics, or other relevant engineering and science domain
  • Experience of motion control and optimal voyage planning techniques
  • Understanding/experience of marine craft control theory is considered an advantage
  • 3 - 5 years of work experience in practical development and implementation of control systems in industrial projects with proven deliverables and contributions
  • Good track records of scientific contributions through publications are considered an advantage
  • Good skills with MATLAB / Simulink
  • Experience in C/C++ programming and Matlab/Simulink code generation workflow
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a global environment
  • Strong English communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Proactive, open-minded and willingness to learn
