Science / ResearchAt ABB, we help industries run leaner and cleaner-and every person here makes that happen. You'll be empowered to lead, supported to grow, and proud of the impact we create together. Join us and help run what runs the world.
This position reports to:
R&D Department Lead
__
At ABB, we help important industries outrun - leaner and cleaner.
Every person here makes that happen. By rethinking, rewiring, and improving, we combine the world's best minds and technologies to elevate performance to a whole new level.
Your Role and Responsibilities
1. Core Design & R&D
• Advanced Simulation: Utilize advanced numerical simulation tools (e.g., ANSYS Maxwell, COMSOL, JMAG) for precise electromagnetic field analysis; lead the resolution of Multi-Physics coupling challenges (Electromagnetic-Thermal-Structural-Fluid).
• Prototyping & Validation: Design and guide prototype manufacturing, experimental plans, and performance testing; validate theoretical models through data comparison and drive iterative design optimization.
• Innovation: Develop application schemes for high-performance electromagnetic materials and innovative topological structures to significantly improve motor efficiency, power density, torque density, and reliability.
• Master the electromagnetic design and modeling, simulation, optimization for a wide range of motors and generators, including Permanent Magnet (PM), Induction, and Synchronous machines.
2. Strategic Planning & Foresight
• Tech Watch: Monitor and conduct in-depth research on global cutting-edge trends, lead technical feasibility analysis and pre-research.
• Roadmap: Participate in formulating the medium-to-long-term strategic planning and technology roadmap for the research center's electromagnetic domain.
• New Tech Integration: Explore the application of emerging technologies such as AI and Digital Twin in motor design, optimization, and condition monitoring.
• Lab Development: Guide the planning and construction of key testing platforms (e.g., EMC Lab, Environmental Simulation Lab).
3.Interdisciplinary Collaboration
• Cross-Functional Synergy: Deeply participate in interdisciplinary projects (Drives/Inverters, Control Theory, Thermal Management, Structural, NVH, Materials) to ensure synergistic optimization of electromagnetic design with other disciplines.
• Manufacturability: Work closely with engineering and process teams to ensure the manufacturability (DFM) of innovative designs.
4.Industry Impact & Academic Contribution
• Publications: Author high-quality technical reports, patent applications, and academic papers; publish research results at top international conferences and journals.
• Representation: Represent ABB at key domestic and international industry conferences, standards committees, and technical forums to build a broad academic and industry network.
• Competitive Intelligence: Analyze competitor technologies and industry standards/regulations (e.g., energy efficiency, safety norms) to provide input for R&D direction and IP strategy.
• Sustainability: Integrate sustainability concepts into design, assess the full lifecycle environmental impact of motors, and drive green, low-carbon design practices.
Qualifications for the Role
Education(Level): Ph.D. degree (or Master's degree with 10+ years of R&D experience) in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mechatronics, or related fields.
Major: Electromagnetic Field Theory, Motor Principles
Language: Fluent in written, reading and oral English.
PC Skills: 5+ years working experience , Proficient in using Ansys Maxwell or equivalent
Personality: Good team player, communication and presentation skills
Professional Experience & Skills:
---Solid foundation in solid mechanics, vibration theory, and fatigue analysis; experience in motor or rotating machinery simulation is preferred.
---Excellent logical analysis skills and a passion for solving complex technical problems.
What's in it for you?
We empower you to take initiative, challenge ideas, and lead with confidence. You'll grow through meaningful work, continuous learning, and support that's tailored to your goals. Every idea you share and every action you take contributes to something bigger.
Benefits
ABB offers a full range of benefits to help you thrive at work and beyond.
