Provides technical support, supervision and coordination of the SM Process and Environmental Labs. Provides support to Process and other departments in the science of chemistry as it relates to plant operations. Coordinates and assists with special projects as directed by the Technical Manager.
JOB DIMENSIONS
· Oversees analysis of 2.65 billion pounds of styrene and required raw materials, totally valued at ~ $1.700 MM.
· Position’s Operational Budget: Prepares and supervises expenditures of the lab budget of approximately $200,000 annually, excluding payrolls.
· Responsible for ~ $1,000,000 of laboratory equipment.
· Oversees the catalyst operation (loading activities and Dehydro surveys) in the SM plant.
· Supervises the SM Lab Specialist, Environmental Lab Specialist, SM Day Lab Technician and 12 Lab Technicians and 4 Contract Lab Technicians.
RESPONSIBILITIES
· This position is responsible for assisting with testing of styrene and its accompanying raw materials and byproducts, the development and implementation of analytical procedures, implementation, and monitoring of standards of performance, and training programs as required for effective laboratory operations.
· This position makes recommendations for system and facilities improvement within the laboratory environment.
· Performs daily review of all test data and watches for experimental deviations, testing errors, sampling errors, etc. Performs daily review of sample information and watches for data entry errors.
· Administer personnel matters for all affected employees (performance reviews, overtime, vacation schedules, Kronos, etc.)
· Maintains the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to ensure quality data is recorded and available as needed. Assists the IT group with the administration of the LIMS database.
· Develops and implements new test methods, modifications of existing methods, and installation of new instruments, including statistical assessment of resulting data.
· Manages the activities and training of the Lab Technicians and the Lab Specialists.
· Supervises Lab Technicians and the Lab Specialists in the performance of analytical testing.
· Sets up and conducts special projects leading to the solution of plant problems.
· Oversees the Lab Specialists in maintaining all laboratory instruments in proper working order. Includes being knowledgeable in the operation, troubleshooting, and upkeep of all laboratory instruments and equipment; ensures that preventive maintenance, calibration and quality checks are conducted on lab equipment as scheduled or when needed as indicated by QC problems.
· Coordinates maintenance of the Laboratory and related areas including retain sample management.
· Oversees the maintenance of inventories of laboratory chemicals and supplies. Prepares requisitions for laboratory materials and submits for approval. Maintains inventory of laboratory equipment, including preparing SORs, AFEs and AFRs.
· Oversees the Lab Specialist in the preparation and standardization of laboratory reagents and solutions as well as the preparation of analytical standards as necessary.
· Oversees the analysis of samples for product shipments, in-process materials and incoming raw materials. Reports results to designated individuals, and properly record results, in an orderly fashion as necessary.
· Monitors and directs laboratory safety programs, loss control activities, and quality programs.
· Responsible for catalyst loading activities for the Dehydro reactors, PAR reactors, Alkylation reactors, the Ethylene Treater, and the RGB.
· Participate on the Internal Audit Team as an ISO 9001 and RC14001 Internal Auditor.
· Responsible for updating and maintaining lab procedures in the Process Lab, Process Lab Procedures and Process Lab Calibration Manuals to ensure compliance with ISO 9001 and other quality and safety directives.
· Designated as a Chemical Hygiene Officer and is responsible for chemical hygiene in the SM Process and Environmental Labs as described in the Chemical Hygiene Plan.
· Responsible for environmental testing and reporting to meet all environmental regulations.
· Perform duties as assigned in the Incident Command Structure as listed in the Emergency Response Plan.
· Lead/Participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) teams investigating lab related incidents and anomalies as required.

· Actively support all policies and management systems adopted by our site organization including high standards of safety, environmental, quality, cost, availability, asset integrity and community relations.
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
This position typically requires a B.S. in Chemistry or related technical degree. Minimum experience required 3-5 years. Good supervisory skills, computer skills, quality control skills, and lab instrument maintenance skills are beneficial. On call 24 hours per day.
