Candu Energy Inc., an AtkinsRéalis company has entered into an agreement with Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to deliver the Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP). The project is spearheading the deployment of the BWRX-300 Small Modular Reactor (SMR), the first of its kind built in the western hemisphere, and due to be on the grid by the end of this decade. We are looking for individuals with a strong technical understanding and leadership to support ongoing construction activities.
The Field Technical Specialist (FTS) team operates as a critical interface between construction and site engineering office to facilitate efficiency in both the dissemination of technical information to construction and conversely construction information to site engineering. While the FTS organization does not possess design change authority, FTS perform much of the work face conveyance of information to support a design change. They also support the interpretation of technical information where required by the construction craft.
The Technical Manager for the FTS team provides functional management oversight and technical guidance (as required) to the multi-disciplinary team. The Technical Manager interfaces with operational stakeholders (Area Leads, Bundle Leads, Construction) to ensure adequate execution and resourcing strategies.
The main roles and responsibilities of the FTS team are:

The main roles and responsibilities of the FTS team are:
- Ensure compliance to Issued for Construction (IFC) design documents and quality requirements.
- Validate construction progress and produced periodic monitoring report, as required.
- Review and/or suggest resolution options for field-initiated changes or clarification requests.
- Assist in the development and execution of readiness for various phases of construction including quality inspections, commissioning, occupancy, and close-out.
- Complete red-line drawings to represent field conditions for work package closeout and final handover documentation, as-required.
- Advise on constructability issues in a proactive manner.
- Liaise with project coordinators during the creation of Construction Work Packages (CWPs), Installation Work Packages (IWPs), and Inspection Test Plans (ITPs).
- Provide technical oversight into the implementation of the CWPs, IWPs, ITPs in the field.
- Identify and mitigate risks associate with construction activities, including safety risks, project delays or technical challenges.

Your role
- manage a team of multidisciplinary Field Technical Specialists performing work with complex interfacing requirements for site/field implementation.
- provide guidance and support in development of relevant governances, procedures, work instructions, and oversee compliance to the established governances/procedures.
- interface with stakeholders, project partners and technical groups (project management, engineering, construction) to ensure FTS tasks executions meet performance, safety, and regulatory requirements.
- provide technical guidance, as required, for multidisciplinary field technical services teams.
- develop and execute staffing strategies to meet project operational demands.
- provide guidance, performance monitoring, and feedback to the team staff.
- interfaces with operational stakeholders (Area Leads, Bundle Leads, Construction) to ensure adequate execution and resourcing strategies.
- seek opportunities for process improvement, cost reduction, and efficiency enhancements in construction operations.
- manage the performance of the team, ensuring team members receive regular performance appraisal reviews and development opportunities, including formal mid-year and annual performance reviews.
- monitor and identify the team members' skills and knowledge development needs and facilitate training/mentorship arrangements.
- Consistent job site presence is expected and support to potential shift-work may be required.
About you
- Diploma in Engineering Technology, Construction Technology, or equivalent from accredited institution; or Degrees in Engineering from an accredited university plus 5 years of relevant field experiences.
- 10+ years of relevant major construction and design-interface field experiences are must.
- 5+ years of experience in leadership roles, with 2+ years of in managerial roles.
Ability to read and understand construction drawings, blueprints and specifications. - Adherence to strict safety and security protocols, with a commitment to maintaining a safe working environment.
- Understanding of nuclear and engineering principles, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements, including staying current on changing regulations.
- Knowledge of Non-Destructive Examination and CGSB standards is an asset
- Knowledge of ASME/CSA welding standards and practices is an asset.
- Understanding the importance and adherence to Quality Assurance Programs.
- Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills to collaborate with diverse teams and stakeholders.
- Strong problem-solving skills to address technical challenges in the field.
- Ability to adapt to changing conditions and work in diverse and challenging field environments.
- Accurate record-keeping and reporting abilities to ensure compliance of field activities.
- A commitment to maintaining high-quality standards in engineering and construction.
- Broad-based business knowledge, with exposure to project controls, procurement and construction practices.

OTHER ASPECTS (IF APPLICABLE):
- Primary work location will be at DNNP SMR site (Bowmanville, ON).
- Occasional alternative work locations, as required, in both the field and office may include OPG Corporate Headquarter (Oshawa, ON) and AtkinsRealis home office (Mississauga, ON).
- Eligibility to obtain Security Clearances is mandatory (Candu internal and Client organizations).
