The Rig Technician is responsible for rotating among rig positions leading to a specialization in maintenance (mechanic or electrician) or rig operations, as part of the fixed-step development program. Independently performs commissioning, repairs and maintenance on electrical controls, SCRs, drives and other equipment for oil and gas drilling industry.
  • Participate in pre-tour and toolbox meetings with the maintenance crew.
  • Complete formal training on health, safety, environment and technical subjects as described by the fixed-step program.
  • Obtain certifications and competencies as required for duties assigned.
  • Maintain equipment in safe working order and report deviations.
  • Complete work assignments in all rig departments, attaining working knowledge of all rig operations.
  • Write analytical reports.
  • Keep record of progress and make monthly reports to the Rig Manager.
  • Uses technical manuals, prints and specifications to get information to diagnose, order parts and repair equipment
  • Uses computer, meters, scopes, and other instruments to test, calibrate and program equipment
  • Troubleshoots & repairs: 1/4HP-2000HP VFD's, AC-PWM Inverters, DC-SCR Drives, General industrial electronics, Power generation controls, Rig automation controls
  • Completes service reports and other documentation as required by the Company
  • Performs all necessary safety checks on equipment prior to commencing work, complies with safety procedures and wears required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Associates Degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering or Technology or equivalent military training or Approved apprenticeship training or OJT.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in the start-up and repair of AC and DC drives and drives systems.
  • Oilfield electrical experience required
  • Should be comfortable reading wiring diagrams, electrical schematics and have a good understanding of ladder logic.
  • Experience in programming PLC's and HMI's desired.
  • Excellent reasoning and problem solving skills to apply knowledge, understand written information and verbal instructions in repairing/servicing unusual and/or unknown technical equipment operational problems
  • Can work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to communicate with customers promoting good customer service
  • Ability to mentor levels one and two technicians.
  • Ability to supervise a small team of technicians and prepare progress reports on each team member.
  • Report to management any issues pertaining to the resolution of operational problems
  • Ability to train rig personnel on Omron Drilling Controls


Travel Requirements:

RPC provides field service 24 hours a day and seven days a week.

60% + domestic & foreign travel required
