Overview
In this position you will work as a key team member of the Toronto-Vaughan Materials Testing Laboratory team located in Vaughan, ON. The successful candidate will be mentored by a variety of highly specialized professionals and will gain valuable experience in the consulting industry.
This senior fulltime position will provide comprehensive training in health and safety as well as performing materials testing on various construction materials such as asphalt, asphalt cement, asphalt emulsions, etc. There is a strong requirement for QA/QC procedures, coordination of project testing, reporting, and teamwork.
This opportunity will introduce you to a great team, helping you build key skills that you will need as a Senior Asphalt Laboratory Engineering Technician, specifically the application of material properties in construction.

Your role
To perform this role successfully, the candidate will be responsible for but not limited to the following:
- Conducting materials testing in accordance with OPSS (Ontario Provincial Standards), AASHTO (The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) and ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) on various materials such as asphalt, asphalt cement, asphalt emulsions, etc.
- High and advanced complexity of asphalt materials testing.
- Marshall and / or Superpave Mix Design testing (CCIL Type "A" Lab Certification).
- Marshall and/or Superpave Mix Compliance testing (CCIL Type "B" Lab Certification).
- Reports test results to Laboratory Supervisor and other technicians in verbal and written form timely and effectively.
- Informs of deviations from expected or specified laboratory testing methods and suggests explanations or further inquiries.
- Participate in functional team activities including safety, housekeeping, training, ordering and maintaining supplies for the laboratory, etc.
- Perform other duties as assigned and directed.
- Review MTO Laboratory Testing Methods and OPSS 1150 and 1151 specifications.
- Possibility of travel to various work sites across Ontario to assist with field sampling (Ministry of Transportation Ontario Superpave Correlation Sampling, etc.).
About you
- College diploma in Civil Engineering or Materials Engineering Technology Programs.
- Canadian Council of Independent Laboratories (CCIL) certified for asphalt testing.
- 4-5 years minimum applicable laboratory experience (familiarity with asphalt materials testing protocols).
- Capability to calibrate, troubleshoot, diagnose, and perform routine repair to laboratory instrumentation.
- Ability to work and travel throughout the Province of Ontario.
- Ability to adapt to changing work conditions and schedules on short notice.
- Available to work on different shifts and schedules.
- Available to work weekends on short notice.
- Valid Ontario Class G driver's license with a clean drivers abstract.
- Expected compensation for this role is between Pay Range $65,000 - $89,300 annually. Base salaries are determined according to several parameters like skills, experience, and potential impact on the role. Internal and external competitiveness are also taken into account in our offers.
