JOB DESCRIPTION

About the Role

The Bit Repair Technician reports directly to the Repair Bit Team Lead and is responsible for performing a variety of manual and machine-based repair processes. These include grinding, blast cleaning, and thermal operations such as brazing and hardfacing using oxy/acetylene equipment.

The role focuses on restoring drill bits and DLR tools to a high operational standard, ensuring efficient turnaround to support field operations. The technician also supports bit movement and logistics when required, contributing to overall operational efficiency and quality performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform repair and assembly of drill bits and DLR tools using grinding, blasting, brazing, and hardfacing techniques.
  • Receive and assess used bits, determining repair viability and rerun potential.
  • Execute thermal processes such as oxy/acetylene brazing and hardfacing in line with approved procedures.
  • Lead by example and support daily repair activities alongside technicians.
  • Plan and prioritize daily tasks to ensure efficient turnaround of repaired equipment.
  • Coordinate with engineering and sales teams for repair approvals and technical guidance.
  • Ensure compliance with Quality Management System (QMS) processes and documentation requirements.
  • Identify and address nonconformities in line with NOV procedures.
  • Maintain accurate repair documentation and records for tracking and reporting.
  • Ensure all tools, equipment, and machinery are operated safely and by trained personnel.
  • Uphold and promote NOV HSE standards in all activities.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work environment.


Additional Responsibilities

  • Support training and development of team members.
  • Participate in pre-job meetings and align with supervisor expectations.
  • Monitor and report on QMS performance and improvement opportunities.
  • Assist with inventory handling and storage procedures.
  • Provide operational support outside standard hours when required.


Qualifications & Skills

Essential Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent experience - ensures foundational knowledge.
  • 3-6 years of relevant experience in manufacturing, repair, welding, grinding, or assembly environments - demonstrates hands-on capability.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, instructions, and technical documentation - critical for accurate repairs.
  • Experience with thermal processes such as brazing or hardfacing - required for core repair tasks.
  • Strong understanding of safety practices and HSE standards - ensures safe operations.
  • Good communication and problem-solving skills - supports teamwork and efficiency.


Desired Qualifications

  • Previous experience in drill bit or oilfield equipment repair - advantageous for faster onboarding.
  • Familiarity with QMS processes and documentation systems - supports compliance and quality.
  • Experience working in fast-paced, technical environments - enhances adaptability.
