This position supports the management of maintenance activities for proprietary and leased railcar fleets supporting Products, Renewables, Oronite, and Hess. The role ensures railcars are maintained in compliance with industry standards, contractual requirements, and all applicable regulations while optimizing cost, reliability, and availability. Maintenance activities are executed through contracted fixed-base shops and mobile repair vendors across North America and Canada.

This is a safety-sensitive position. The supervisor may be remotely located. The role requires approximately 20-25% travel.

Key Responsibilities

Railcar Maintenance & Fleet Management
  • Assist in managing the maintenance of proprietary and leased railcar fleets, coordinating work performed at fixed-base contracted shops and with mobile railcar repair vendors across North America and Canada.
  • Maintain and administer the railcar life-cycle maintenance program, including acceptance criteria and required documentation to ensure compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations.
  • Direct railcars to appropriate contract shops based on operational needs, shop capacity, contract pricing, and shop performance metrics.
  • Manage maintenance processes through field visits, frequent interaction with contracted shops, mobile vendors, component manufacturers, and customer service personnel.

Financial & Contract Management
  • Work with internal customers to develop railcar maintenance budgets and manage expenditures within approved budgets while meeting or exceeding industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Audit maintenance estimates and invoices to ensure compliance with contractual provisions.
  • Approve and submit invoices for payment in the required accounting systems.
  • Review, approve, and submit railroad interchange invoices to ensure proper maintenance is performed on company-owned railcars without excess or unnecessary repairs.

Reliability & Technical Analysis
  • Analyze railcar maintenance issues and develop corrective action plans aligned with operating expense objectives.
  • Modify reliability plans and maintenance protocols to improve railcar availability and performance.
  • Perform economic analyses to determine repair versus scrap decisions for damaged or aging railcars.

Regulatory Compliance
  • Monitor regulatory changes and assess potential impacts to fleet operations.
  • Support regulatory inspections and ensure timely corrective actions in response to rule changes or findings.

New Railcar & Technology Support
  • Provide input into the development of specifications for new railcar purchases.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies, materials, and design alternatives; recommend options for review or selection.
  • Participate in pre-production design reviews and conduct construction shop inspections during new railcar builds.

Working Conditions
  • Safety-sensitive role with responsibility for compliance and operational integrity.

  • Approximately 20-25% travel required to maintenance facilities, vendors, and inspection locations.

Required Qualifications:
  • 2+ years of railcar/tank car maintenance, repair, qualification, or inspection coordination experience
  • Strong coordination skills with repair facilities and service providers; able to drive compliant execution, documentation discipline, and follow-through on issues
  • Strong tracking and organizational capability across requalification programs, shop work, and urgent repairs
  • Ability to learn and effectively use rail maintenance and data systems

Preferred:
  • Engineering or technical degree preferred (not required)
  • Working knowledge of 49 CFR 179-180 and AAR tank car standards
  • Experience managing railcar maintenance programs across general purpose and pressure cars, including coating/lining programs and vendor oversight
  • Experience with rail maintenance/data systems (e.g., AllTranstek, Bourque, Railinc portals)
  • Demonstrated cost discipline and experience supporting budgets, along with process or digital improvements at scale

Relocation may be considered within Chevron parameters.
