The Vacancy

WGM Engineering, part of RSK Group, is looking for a Hazardous Area Electrical Technician - CompEx to join our E&M Services DSEAR team on a permanent, full-time basis. This is a site-based role supporting work across operational water and industrial sites.

This is a hands-on opportunity for an experienced electrical technician to inspect, maintain and install electrical and instrumentation equipment located within potentially explosive atmospheres. The role will suit someone with current CompEx Ex01-Ex04 certification who is confident working safely in hazardous areas, carrying out electrical isolations, identifying defects and completing accurate inspection and technical records.

About the Role

As Hazardous Area Electrical Technician - CompEx, you will support the delivery of electrical and instrumentation inspection, maintenance, installation and remedial works across client sites.

The role is responsible for helping ensure hazardous-area equipment remains safe, compliant and suitable for the relevant operating environment through visual, close and detailed inspections, defect identification and effective remedial close-out. Working closely with the Delivery Manager, Project Engineers, site operations teams, client representatives and wider WGM colleagues, you will help ensure all activities are properly planned, safely completed and accurately documented.

What you'll do:
  • Inspect, maintain, repair and install electrical and instrumentation equipment, cabling, glands, containment and associated components within potentially explosive atmospheres.
  • Complete visual, close and detailed hazardous-area inspections in line with the required inspection grade, programme and applicable technical standards.
  • Carry out safe electrical isolations, proving-dead activities and reinstatement procedures in accordance with WGM Electrical Safety Rules and client requirements.
  • Identify, classify and document defects, non-conformances and unsuitable equipment, supporting remedial actions through to effective close-out.
  • Undertake site surveys, including equipment identification, measurements, photographs and assessment of access, egress and operational conditions.
  • Interpret and apply electrical drawings, equipment data, technical specifications, hazardous-area classification information and DSEAR documentation.
  • Ensure equipment protection concepts, certification and markings, gas or dust groups, temperature classes and equipment protection levels are correctly understood and applied.
  • Produce accurate inspection reports, defect records, site-survey information and supporting technical documentation.
  • Work in accordance with approved RAMS, permits, safe systems of work and relevant health, safety, environmental and quality requirements.
  • Provide clear progress updates and promptly escalate technical, safety, quality, access or programme concerns.
  • Support testing, commissioning and handover activities where required.
  • Complete relevant training and assessment to progress towards Approved Person status under WGM Electrical Safety Rules and Isolation Safety Rules, where appropriate.

What you'll bring:
  • Completed a recognised electrical apprenticeship and hold an SVQ/NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds qualification or equivalent recognised electrical craft qualification.
  • Current CompEx Ex01-Ex04 certification.
  • Experience inspecting, maintaining and installing electrical and instrumentation equipment within potentially explosive atmospheres.
  • Sound knowledge of hazardous-area protection concepts, equipment markings, cable-glanding requirements and relevant installation standards.
  • Demonstrable competence in safe electrical isolation, proving dead and reinstatement procedures.
  • The ability to interpret electrical drawings, technical specifications, equipment data and hazardous-area classification information.
  • Experience identifying, recording and progressing electrical defects and non-conformances.
  • The ability to produce clear, accurate inspection reports, defect records and site-survey information.
  • A practical, reliable and safety-focused approach, with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage priorities and meet deadlines.
  • A valid UK driving licence and the flexibility to travel to operational client sites.

Salary and Benefits
  • We offer a competitive benefits package designed to support our people both inside and outside of work. This includes:
  • 32 days' holiday, increasing to 36 days based on length of service
  • Pension Scheme, with WGM contributing 6%
  • Life assurance scheme that pays 3 x salary
