About the role

Balfour Beatty, one of the UK's leading infrastructure organisations, is seeking a proactive and highly skilled Lead Document Controller to join our Birmingham-based team. This is a key role within our project delivery function, ensuring the smooth, accurate and strategic flow of information across major schemes.

As a Lead Document Controller, you will oversee and manage document control activities across complex, multi-disciplinary projects. You will provide guidance to document control teams, maintain rigorous quality standards, and ensure compliance with internal and client requirements. A crucial part of your role will be shaping and implementing our document management strategy, ensuring our processes drive efficiency, clarity and consistency across all stages of the project lifecycle.

What you'll be doing

As Lead Document Controller you will:
  • Lead and coordinate document control activities across the project team.
  • Develop, deliver, and continually improve document management strategies and workflows.
  • Maintain accurate records, version control, and audit trails in line with project and industry standards.
  • Support project teams with training, guidance and system best practice.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to ensure timely document submission and approval.
  • Ensure compliance with governance, security protocols and quality requirements.
Who we're looking for

You will have the following:
  • Significant experience in document control within construction or infrastructure.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to guide and influence others.
  • A strategic mindset, able to evaluate, streamline and enhance document management processes.
  • Knowledge of common document management systems (e.g., ProjectWise, Asite, Viewpoint).
  • Excellent attention to detail, organisation and communication skills.
